Private Equity Funds: Business Structure and Operations (Corporate Securities Series) (Corporate Securities Series) ReviewI've been searching for such a book on private equity funds for many years. Most of the books I read on the subject are disappointingly superficial. So it was a great risk for me purchasing another book on private equity from Amazon without any cover picture, contents, reviews and with a rather solid price. However, I've taken the risk and purchased James M. Shell's "Private Equity Funds: Business Structure and Operations" recently, and I must say Mr.Shell's work is by far the most professional and in-depth book on fund structure and operations ever written.
I had purchased and read Joseph W.Bartlett's "Advanced Private Equity Term Sheets and Series A Documents: Business Structure and Operations (Corporate Securities Series.)" before (also from Law Journal Press series). I must say, I considered it being a good book, but only until I've found J.M.Shell's masterwork.

Family Flip Quiz: General Knowledge ReviewThe name "Flip Quiz" comes from the design. These "books" are spiral bound and have a stiff cardboard section that opens out to form a triangular stand like a small easel with the spiral binding on the top. This allows the cards (pages) to be flipped over. The cards are printed on both sides so two people can sit with the easel in between and quiz each other.
There are about 150 quizzes in four levels. Each card has 10-15 questions in several categories. The General Knowledge book has six categories: Natural World, History, Science and Maths, Geography, English, and General Knowledge. The History book also has six categories: Science & technology, The Arts, People in History, General Knowledge, Exploration and Discovery, and Warfare & Weapons. Each category has a little symbol or icon that identifies the category of each question.
The questions vary considerably in difficulty even with a level with substantial overlap. Maybe this was intentional to give the game some variability and unpredictability.
Level 1 is very basic. Some questions are: "Which bear has a white coat?" and "What do we call the U-shaped plate nailed to a horse's hoof?".
Level 2 is somewhat harder. Some questions are: "What is a census?" and "Who was Saladin?".
Level 3 is harder to categorize. Some questions include: "How many notes are there in an octave?" and "Of which family was Bonnie Prince Charlie?".
Level 4 is even harder to categorize. Some questions include: "Which stimulant is found in coffee and tea?" and "What is a cassowary?".
As far as I can tell, the higher levels have more questions that few people would know, but all have at least a few questions that just about anyone can get right. Again, maybe this is intentional so people do not get discouraged.
Overall, this is a pretty good game for its time. Especially for the price. I don't know what they cost originally. I paid about $2-$3 each used plus shipping. They seem to be fairly easy to come by for that price. If you have kids of about the same age who like quiz games, this would be a few bucks well spent.
This would make a great interactive game over the Internet.

Beyond al-Qaeda: Part 2, The Outer Rings of the Terrorist Universe: Outer Rings of the Terrorist Universe Pt. 2 ReviewFollowing the tragedy of 9/11, the U.S. Air Force sponsored a study by the RAND Corporation of the phenomenon of terrorism that is the terrorist organizations and operations that constituted a threat to national security. This study was completed in 2004 and published as a two volume book set in 2006. The Rand team that put this study together did what the U.S. Intelligence Community IC) has so conspicuously failed to do; that is analyze the structural organization, ideology, financial structure, leadership of the al Qaeda and other groups that are affiliated with Osama bin Laden and track both their organizational and operational evolution. The common factor that they believe these groups hold is their adherence to an ideology referred to as "Jiahdist-Salifism" by Gilles Kepel in his book "Jihad: The Trail of Political Islam" (Harvard 2002) which he defines as " respect for the sacred texts in their most literal form [and] an absolute commitment to Jihad." Perhaps their key finding was that with the loss of their Afghan sanctuary, al Qaeda transformed into what another Rand study ("Networks and Netwars" Arquilla et al 2001) called a network type of organization and bin Laden with his immediate entourage transformed from a central command into more of a symbolic and ideological center. The network type of organization which the authors of this study refer to (perhaps more accurately) as the "al Qaeda Nebula" is an organization consisting of groups and individuals focused around several common themes and the "Jihadist-Salifism" ideology. They are held together through such 21st Century devices as the Internet and cell phones. With bin Laden serving as the nominal leader and more importantly as a living symbol of their ideology. This study of course provides considerably more information on al Qaeda modus operandi, financing, and strategic goals all of which appears to be pretty accurate. One would think this would be required reading for the folks manning the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC), but very unlikely.Beyond al-Qaeda: Part 2, The Outer Rings of the Terrorist Universe: Outer Rings of the Terrorist Universe Pt. 2 OverviewExamines violent terrorist groups that, while not formally allied with al-Qaeda, could pose a threat to Americans now or in the future and to the security of our friends and allies. The authors show how terrorists use criminal organizations and connections to finance their activities, and they identify distinct strategies to neutralize or mitigate these threats.

The Fellowship of the Ring Sourcebook (The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game) ReviewThis book mostly outlines the timeline of both Peter Jacksons' films and the trilogy from J.R.R. Tolkien, and spells it all out in plain english. There's also a lot of good information on *each* of the major characters from the books and film, and the differences between each. In the "Places" chapter it outlines major places of note, and gives some maps and adventure hooks as well. All in all I am very happy with it; but it *is* just a sourcebook, it doesn't have much actual DM stuff in it for the game. Let Freedom Ring For the Women ReviewI would give this book no stars if I could. I downloaded a sample of this book to my kindle as I always like to expand my selection of reading materials. I can honestly say that I am so glad that I did not pay for this book. This book is crazy, somewhat of a mad-woman's journal. There is really no other way to explain it. I can't even believe someone published this book. The grammar is horrific, the spelling is awful, and there are more run-on sentences than I can count. The publisher should really, at the very least, run spell check. Ms. Baxter talks about the craziest things, yet she specifically says in the book that she is not a crazy person. I am not sure any sane person reading this book would agree.Let Freedom Ring For the Women OverviewHave you ever had a prayer that ultimately changed and altered your life forever? I have and to this very day this prayer haunts me. There are piece of the prayer that I don't understand but after what I have had to go through I know what I have to do. At the time of the prayer I just thought to myself, oh this nice lady wants to say a nice prayer for me. What harm could from a simple prayer. Now you must realize at the time of the prayer I had been married for at least seven years and thought I was in a happy normal marriage. So there are periods throughout the prayer that I am screaming NO, NO that I don't want this to happen in my life. Even though I am screaming NO to these major events, that I don't want to happen, somehow God used this prayer to forewarn me and gave me the responsibility of forewarning you of the events to come in the future.
