Concrete People and the Ring of Empathy ReviewThis book gives you much to consider. Homelessness is a pretty prevalent problem, doubly so in today's economic climate, and Eric here has taken a noble and genuine approach in addressing the issue over a broad spectrum. A variety of folks share their unique set of circumstances on how they became who they are now, providing the ever-sobering realization that this is an honest-to-goodness problem that can happen to literally anyone at any time. Reader be warned though, this book is definitely not for the light-hearted; the causes of homelessness are many and seldom easy to swallow, and no exception is made here. There WILL be graphic depictions of the tales the homeless interviewed will tell (one could argue a little too graphic), though understandably it is for the greater good of highlighting the severity of how this new and shattering reality befell these unfortunate individuals.
The story uses the interviews conducted as the foundation, injecting some fantasy elements to help tell them cohesively, hence the Ring of Empathy, the main driving force behind the narrative. I like this setup; it keeps the reader's interest while serving as a good vehicle for the moral of the book rather than just telling everything there is outright.
It is a fairly short and digestible read with plenty to soak into and think about. I recommend it!Concrete People and the Ring of Empathy Overview
