It Doesn't Ring a Bell ReviewRacer Lynch's It Doesn't Ring a Bell rings too true, and it is not a welcome sound. It has all the mirth of a death knell. Move over, Magdalene Sisters, Doubt, and Evelyn. This is not a mere book: it is an expose of stultifying degradation and dehumanizing robotic regimentation in an Irish convent with the counterintuitive name of "Fairview."Through the indomitable spirits the likes of Sister Elizabeth, one prays (?) that light will outshine the dark, dank setting of the convent and the hapless Postulants who have found their way there. As the lyrics of Phil Coulter's "The Town I Loved So Well" profess, "Their spirits have been bruised, never broken." Or so one hopes.
The last chapter of the book leaves one with the vacant hope that this kind of oppression, of vile human subjugation under the guise of religious piety, does not exist today.
Still an uneasy feeling gnaws viscerally. And sometimes a bruise is an painful as a break.
A wake-up call of a tome, brilliantly crafted. Read it, and be enLIGHTened. It Doesn't Ring a Bell Overview
